Chapter 10.

“I CAN see a big cake.” Ollie stroked Alexander’s chest, and his eyes fluttered as if he was falling asleep. “Big cake with chocolate frosting, and they made some kind of sangria for everybody to drink. Not the kind with alcohol but, like, a kid-safe version because they remembered how much you hate soda.”

“How are you doing this?” Alexander demanded.

“I don’t know. I just… I see it. Like a movie.” Ollie closed his eyes and scrunched up his brow. “A weird, blurry movie that’s inside your head but then it’s in my head.”

To see all that is hidden, Rota said in awe.

“Is this real?” Alexander croaked, hating how broken he sounded. He couldn’t believe this was happening, and he pushed himself up so he could look at Ollie’s face as his heart hammered in his throat.

“Yeah….” Ollie smiled. “I can see some tall skinny guy with glasses and a lady with dark hair….”

Swallowing over the lump in the back of his throat, Alexander whispered, “My parents.”

“They look real happy. I can’t see any presents, though.” Ollie’s brow wrinkled. “That’s all fuzzy. But everybody looks super happy.” He opened his eyes and grinned. “I can see you. In a mirror. You’re all covered in cake. Looks like there was a cake fight, and you seriously lost.”

Alexander didn’t even realize tears were running down his face until Ollie reached up to wipe his cheeks.

“Hey.” Ollie was still smiling, but his gaze seemed unfocused, as if he was still seeing whatever memory his starsight had allowed. “Your eyes were brown….”

Oh, Alexander, Rota murmured, a wave of sweet comfort flooding their bond. Oh, my love.

Alexander swallowed again, trying to hold back a sob. I never knew. I never even knew what color my eyes were…. I saw the pictures at Hazel, but me, Alexander, I never knew, I never saw them—

“My love.” Rota seized Ollie’s body and wrapped his arms around Alexander, pulling him against his chest and kissing his hair. “Oh, sweet boy. I’m here. I’m right here.”

I’m here too. I’m sorry. Ollie’s thoughts sounded frantic. Wait, I didn’t mean to upset you, I didn’t mean to hurt you—

“It’s okay, it’s okay.” Alexander clung to Rota, to Ollie, holding them as tightly as he could. He didn’t dare cry. He refused to. He couldn’t—

What’s the matter, pretty boy? Aw, are you gonna cry for us? Aw, is the pretty little baby gonna cry? Come on, lemme see those tears. Lemme see ’em. Come on, just give me what I want—

“No,” Ollie’s voice said sternly. He sounded different, strange, not like himself at all. “No more.” He pressed his hand between their bodies, his palm against Alexander’s heart.

There was a jolt of pressure, and Alexander had trouble breathing. It was like Ollie was reaching right into his chest and going up his throat, tickling the bottom of his brain.

Alexander? Rota asked worriedly. Ollie, what are you doing?

Ollie didn’t answer, and he kept his hand where it was. He seemed far away, and his expression was blank.
